Beth Carolan, a 1999 Notre Dame High School graduate who was known then as Beth Kocanski, wrestles under the name Beth Phoenix.

Carolan made her debut on the May 8 episode of World Wrestling Entertainment’s “Monday Night Raw,” the culmination of nearly 10 years of working her way up in the world of professional wrestling.

Carolan, a 1999 Notre Dame High School graduate who was known then as Beth Kocanski, wrestles under the name Beth Phoenix. After several years wrestling for small regional promotions, Carolan inked a developmental contract with the WWE - the major league of pro wrestling - last fall. She has spent the last few years wrestling for Ohio Valley Wrestling in Louisville, Ky., a promotion known as a training ground for the WWE.

On the May 8 “Raw,” Carolan jumped from the crowd to attack wrestler Mickie James and rescue fan-favorite Trish Stratus. On this Monday’s show, Stratus introduced Carolan to fans. In the developing storyline, Carolan has shown up to avenge some old wrong committed by James.

“(Monday) night I did more of the same,” she said. “I aligned myself with Trish Stratus … Mickie’s kind of been a thorn in her side, and I’ve been brought in to even the odds.”

Carolan is married to professional wrestler Joey Carolan. She was the first girl on Notre Dame’s wrestling team and started competing professionally as a student at Canisius College in Buffalo.

Breaking into the regular television roster means a lot of changes in Carolan’s life. She is on the road full-time performing in wrestling shows, she said by cell phone Tuesday from a jet flying out of Houston. She said she expects to appear on the Monday night television program for the foreseeable future.

Life, she said, is “Awesome.”

“Dreams are coming true everywhere,” she said.
